An overnight stay in
one of the finest Hilton Head Hotels was my birthday gift from my husband. Ocean Front Resort. Wow!!!
When you plan your vacation on Hilton Head (or anywhere for that matter) - first decision you have to make is where to stay. Is it going to be a vacation rental villa or one of the Hilton Head Hotels??? Well...it all depends.
If you stay
in a hotel be prepared to eat out which is nice (and there are a lot of choices on the island) but gets
cumbersome at times and could become pricey. However If you are coming here just for a few days (less than a week)
one of the Hilton Head Hotels would be a perfect choice. You can easily find all of them on internet and book your room
in less than 10 minutes. But not so fast. Consider this first: likewise with rental villas I must say it again:
Rent ocean front!!!!!
And I mean ocean front room not only ocean front resort. You will be surprised how much more you will benefit from falling asleep and waking up to the sound of ocean waves.
Needless to say you can also spend time on the balcony having a cup of coffee or a drink and still be on the beach. If you do decide for the ocean front (please do!) go for a higher floor. Actually the higher, the better. If you are on the lower level you automatically hear all the hotel traffic (people walking around, talking etc) and you will get distracted from fully enjoying the beach and the ocean.
As any resort, Hilton Head offers quite a few luxury hotels. Frankly, you cannot go wrong with any of them, however there are differences. Location, quality for $$$ and general "feel".
I will sort Hilton Head Hotels by location like I did with the villas. To find out more about each one of them just click on my links.
Westin is in Port Royal plantation (before the gate). I always think about Westin as a "king of kings" of Hilton Head Island Hotels. If you want class and I mean class, stay in Westin. Right from the entrance to the finishing touches, everything is "grande". Not much around the hotel though...
Westin hosts a lot of corporate events and it has a perfect
touch and size (grande!) for doing that. To me it feels very official, coldly elegant yet very classy.
Mid-island is quieter than south end but you don't miss out on island activities. You have access to golf, tennis, restaurants (both hotels have restaurants on premises but you also have Alexander's just outside Palmetto Dunes and a choice of restaurants just across the highway in Shelter Cove Marina).
Of course you can move around the island by car and get anywhere in minutes but sometimes it is so nice just to forget about the car and just walk or bike if possible. Bike and kayak (or canoe) rental is within walking distance from both hotels. You can also walk to the General Store where you can get a morning paper, cup of coffee, have breakfast and/or lunch, get your 'beach stuff", groceries, souvenirs. Wow! What a nice, convenient little store.
Crowne Plaza Resort and Holiday Inn Oceanfront.
Not much around the hotel but
you'll can enjoy it's garden like setting. We love to photograph there because besides the beach we have plenty
of little "locations" where we can pose our customers. Little pond with a fountain, several benches, hammocks.
It is really beautiful there and as a hotel guest you can just enjoy all of it all day long.
Holiday Inn is located in the middle of action.
If you like shopping and dining and have it all within walking distance- then voila! With Coligny Plaza across the street, you'll never get bored.
Sea Pines Plantation is a little world within Hilton Head. You'll find anything and everything there starting with famous Harbour Town Golf Links ending with fabulous shopping and dining. Not to mention miles of bike routes throughout the plantation.
Sea Pines is something you'll have to visit if you are not staying there.
You must see the Harbour Town with the well known Lighthouse, you must stop at South Beach Marina Village and
hopefully meet Salty dog, needless to say you will enjoy best sunsets ever on South beach.
Sea Pines is golfers' paradise. So, although I am a beach person, I understand very well that golf lovers will enjoy golf course view more than the ocean. There is definitely one lodging possibility in Sea Pines that you should look into: The Inn at Harbour Town, one of the best Hilton Head Hotels.
